This is a prominence or swelling on the inner border of the forefoot near the base of the big toe. This causes pain over the bunion and difficulty in wearing footwear as the forefoot broadens. As the deformity worsens it may cause smaller toe deformities. Mild deformities can be managed with bunion sleeves and footwear modifications . Severe or rapidly progressive bunion deformities require surgical correction of the alignment, length, and rotation of the first ray of the foot and balancing the soft tissues around the big toe. Weight bearing on special heel weight bearing footwear may be allowed within a week of surgery depending on the type of procedure and full weight bearing by 6 weeks of surgery. Read More
